Big Dry Friday, which started in 2018, is a day to recognise the importance of rural and regional Australia, to connect city and country and to provide support where it's needed most.

The concept is simple…. On a Friday, once a year, city people forego (or match) what they might spend on a nice lunch or a burger, chips and a beer and donate it to the cause.

Over the past three years we have raised almost $2.5 million with the help of Morgans clients, staff and business partners across Australia and distributed these funds directly to farmers suffering financial hardship.

We aim to continue the momentum in 2021 with a new focus on creating long-term benefits for rural Australia – supporting education, mental health and those suffering financial hardship.

Big Dry Friday – How it began

In 2018, Morgans launched its first 'Big Dry Friday' with the aim of creating awareness of the plight that many regional and rural Australians were facing at the hands of one of our most severe droughts.

The Morgans network – including staff, clients, friends and business partners from around Australia were invited to donate an amount they would spend on a few Friday drinks, a meal, or a sporting match for example. Donations reached $775,000 in 2018, with the help of the Morgans Foundation and the Morgans Institutional Desk, which donated its commission on the day.

A year later, in 2019 the situation remained even more devastating, compounded by further adverse weather conditions and bush fires in tinder dry areas. The Morgans Foundation and The Goldburg Family Foundation matched dollar-for-dollar all funds raised (capped at $350,000) and the Morgans Institutional Team again donated its commission on the day, helping the 2019 campaign reach a total of $1.3 million.

Big Dry Friday 2018 - 2020

In 2020, during a challenging year for many as COVID19 took hold, we marked BDF with a smaller event – Little Dry Friday. We raised more than $365,000 thanks to generous donations by Morgans staff, clients, business partners and friends. We held raffles, a fundraising lunch, breakfast events, an online auction and encouraged donations from the wider community.

A special mention goes to The Goldburg Family Foundation for their donation of $50,000 and the Morgans Foundation for generously contributing $250,000, as well as several corporate contributors including Garda Property Group, Rowland, McCullough Roberston, ANZ Bank, Austrex, and Clayton Utz.

All proceeds were donated to Rural Aid, which is an Australian charity dedicated to supporting rural communities. Rural Aid dispersed 100% of the funds via gift cards to farmers suffering financial hardship.
