Fixed Interest

accordion-minusaccordion-plus

Fixed interest investments are loans made to governments or companies that pay a fixed rate of interest for a set period of time. They include bonds, term deposits and debentures.

How can we help?

Fixed interest investments have a place in most portfolios. Our advisers can advise on the right balance for your portfolio.

Fixed interest investment types
Bonds

A bond is a loan to a government or company. The borrower pays interest (a coupon) for a set period of time and repays the face value on maturity.

Term deposits

A term deposit is a cash investment with a bank, credit union or building society for a specific amount of time at a fixed interest rate.

Debentures

A debenture is similar to a bond but is secured against the borrower’s assets rather than by government backing.

Benefits of fixed interest investments
  • Regular, predictable income stream
  • Capital preservation
  • Diversification of investment portfolio
  • Lower risk compared to shares

Margin Lending

accordion-minusaccordion-plus

Margin lending is a type of investment loan that allows you to borrow money to invest in shares, managed funds or other approved securities.

How can we help?

Our advisers can help you understand whether margin lending is appropriate for your situation and structure a facility that suits your needs.

How does margin lending work?

A margin loan uses your existing investments as security. The lender sets a loan-to-value ratio (LVR) for each approved security, which determines the maximum amount you can borrow against it.

Benefits of margin lending
  • Leverage – increase your exposure to investment markets
  • Diversification – build a larger, more diversified portfolio
  • Tax effectiveness – interest on investment loans is generally tax deductible
Risks of margin lending

Margin lending amplifies both gains and losses. If the value of your portfolio falls, you may receive a margin call requiring you to reduce your loan balance. It is important to understand and manage these risks.

Options and Warrants

accordion-minusaccordion-plus

Options and warrants are financial derivatives that give the holder the right, but not the obligation, to buy or sell an underlying asset at a specified price on or before a specified date.

How can we help?

Our advisers can help you understand and use options and warrants as part of your investment strategy.

Options

An option gives the holder the right to buy (call option) or sell (put option) shares at a set price (exercise price) on or before a set date (expiry date).

Warrants

A warrant is similar to an option but is issued by a third party (usually a bank or financial institution) rather than through an exchange.

Uses of options and warrants
  • Hedging – protecting an existing portfolio against a fall in value
  • Income generation – generating additional income from an existing portfolio
  • Leverage – gaining exposure to a larger portfolio with a smaller outlay
  • Speculation – taking a view on the direction of a market or stock

What our clients say about us

"About 12 months ago, our decades-long friendly association with a Morgans Financial Adviser in Brisbane came to an end with her retirement. My wife and I took that opportunity to transfer our Morgans investment interests to Les Batchelor, a Financial Adviser based in Warrnambool.

Les and his very capable staff welcomed us as new clients in a professional and hassle-free manner. Since the changeover, Les has been in regular email contact, providing well-researched investment information and offering further advice whenever needed, including in-person meetings. We’re very satisfied with the service Les provides, and the arrangement works well for us."
